Rain pushed the start of the race at Phoenix back nearly seven hours. Before the checkered flag could wave, rain would play a factor again. With 93 laps remaining, heavy rain brought out the red flag and ultimately Dale Earnhardt Jr. would win the rain-shortened race.

“We will take this win,” Junior said following the race. “It has been a long year and we put a lot of effort into it and we are starting to see somethings turn around and work for us like we want.  We were fast all weekend, so real proud of this.”

Kevin Harvick finished second, but would still come out a winner as he advanced to the Championship Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Joining Harvick were Jeff Gordon with his win at Martinsville, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr.

Kurt Busch had a shot at getting into the final four, but was penalized at the start of the race. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver passed pole-sitter Jimmie Johnson at the start-finish line and served a pass-through penalty. He would recover to finish in the top 10, but it wasn’t enough to advance.

While the race itself was an uneventful one, it sets up the perfect scenario for the final race.

Harvick comes in as the defending champion. Busch has fought through adversity from the start of the season. Truex is a perpetual underdog on a single-car team. As for Gordon, well, did you hear he’s retiring after this season?

NASCAR has its storylines complete and a massive battle will take place next week. Oh, did we mention that Matt Kenseth will return? And that Logano is out of the points race? Yeah, Homestead is going to be fun.
