Pure Michigan 400 2015: Winner, recap and results from Michigan

The Joe Gibbs Racing run hit a speed bump at Watkins Glen, but started right back at Michigan. Matt Kenseth started from the pole on Sunday afternoon and finished in the same position, winning his third race of the season in the Pure Michigan 400.

Kenseth came away with the checkered flag, but it was yet another dominant performance by JGR. Denny Hamlin (fifth) and Carl Edwards (sixth) finished with top 10s while Kyle Busch (11th) narrowly missed out on another.

“I don’t think you can ever guess in pro sports,” Joe Gibbs said on the NBCSN broadcast. “Right now we’re going to enjoy this, though.”

Austin Dillon wasn’t able to come away with his first win at the Sprint Cup level, but he was a huge factor in the race. Kenseth led 146 laps, but Dillon’s 19 were the second most on Sunday. The Richard Childress Racing driver finished fourth, his highest result of his career.

The second-year driver had some interesting comments about his run with Kenseth pushing him every time he took the lead.

Clint Bowyer saw his chances at making the Chase take a huge hit on Sunday. The No. 15 machine was forced to go high after nearly making contact with Brad Keselowski, ultimately clipping Ryan Newman and running into an infield wall.

Bowyer headed to the garage for repairs to his suspension, but finished 41st and double-digit laps down. This all after he led a lap and was running consistently in the top five all afternoon. Suffice to say, it’s simply not a good spot to be for Michael Waltrip Racing, especially if there is another new winner before the Chase begins.

Jimmie Johnson also struggled on Sunday with a mistake on pit road and spins on the track. Luckily for JJ, he has four wins this season and will enter NASCAR’s postseason at or near the top of the Chase Grid.
