NASCAR FedEx 400 in Dover starting lineup for Sprint Cup

Joe Gibbs Racing’s stranglehold over the Sprint Cup continued on Friday afternoon as Denny Hamlin took the pole. It was his first pole of the season and the 21st of his career with a final speed of 160.121 mph during the final run.

Ironically enough, the FedEx Cares car will lead the way in the FedEx 400. Nope, that wasn’t set up at all.

The Toyota team won both races at Charlotte with Hamlin taking the Sprint All-Star race and Carl Edwards backflipping after the Coca-Cola 600. Ironically enough, Hamlin was on the pole during the All-Star event while JGR teammate Matt Kenseth was on the pole last Sunday.

Just behind the Gibbs driver was Martin Truex Jr., who has 11 top-10 finishes this season in 12 races. Bob Pockrass of ESPN noted just how astounding the last two weeks have been for Truex leading up to Dover:

While Truex’s Chevrolet was able to find speed, the Hendrick Motorsports cars struggled again during qualifying. Jimmie Johnson was the top car in the Hendrick stable and only qualified 14th. He has nine wins at the track, so Johnson should have no issues getting back up to the front despite not making the final round on Friday.

Here’s a look at the full lineup before the FedEx 400 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.
