It wasn’t the Big One, but it was certainly the most terrifying scene NASCAR has seen in years. Austin Dillon, after contact with Denny Hamlin, was lifted off the track and directly into the catchfence at the start-finish line.

The No. 3 car Dillon drove was ripped to shreds. Members of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears’ crews ran to tear him from the tattered machine. Dillon was able to escape from the car, despite the roof being smashed in on the track.

With the obvious history of the No. 3 car at Daytona, it was an even more horrifying site for NASCAR fans. Not that it would have been any less terrifying to see any other car flipping on the track after contact with the catchfence.

After Dillon stepped out of the car and was cleared by the infield care center, drivers reacted to the situation. Here is a look at driver reaction, starting with Earnhardt—the Coke Zero 400 winner.
