After a Sprint Cup race turned into essentially a demolition derby, Carl Edwards pulled out his first win of the season in the Food City 500 on Sunday afternoon at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Sunday’s race saw a total of 15 cautions, with three of the four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers caught up in five of them. But a win heals all for Edwards and the JGR team, especially with three drivers now locked into the Chase along with Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch.

“Really awesome to have a win so we can really have some fun and focus on this championship,” Edwards said after the win.

Edwards’ win was his first since Darlington was renamed Carlington last fall. After starting from the pole on Sunday, the No. 19 car led 276 laps for the 26th victory of his career and his fourth at Bristol.

Meanwhile, Matt Kenseth, Busch and Hamlin all experienced serious issues, culminating in Busch ultimately keeping his No. 18 car in the garage. After two straight wins for Busch, the frustration was evident in the infield.

“This track sucked for me ever since the grind,” Busch said of about Bristol. “I’m about sick and tired of coming here. It sucks.”

Just behind Edwards was Dale Earnhardt Jr., who recovered throughout the race after going down three laps at the beginning due to a mechanical issue. Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott and Trevor Bayne rounded out the top five.

Bayne wasn’t the only surprise near the top of the leaderboard, with Matt DiBenedetto earning a career-high sixth-place result and Clint Bowyer earned his first top 10 with HScott Motorsports with an eight-place finish.
