Denny Hamlin’s chances at repeating in the Spring race at Martinsville Speedway were dashed early on Sunday. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver lost control of the No. 11 machine before smashing into the wall and heading to the garage.
Hamlin had 16 top-10 finishes in his first 20 attempts at his home track, but will suffer his worst result after Sunday’s race. His previous worst before the 39th-place result was 37th in his second race at the track over a decade ago in 2006.
During his career, Hamlin has normally been dominant at Martinsville with five wins and an average finish of fourth over the last three races. After already securing a berth to the Chase with a win at Daytona, he’ll get another crack at winning at the track in Martinsville for a potential spot in the Championship Round.
