Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals plans about traveling to Germany, taking commercial flight

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a busy man. Even on his off week, he’s traveling from a race track to a different city.

Only this week, he won’t be staying in a hauler or even in the United States.

Junior will be traveling to Germany to visit family and find out more about his Earnhardt roots. In a family so rich in racing, it’s only fitting that he visits the country where BMW and the Autobahn were created.

“Well, I got some specific towns that we’re going to go visit that we understand that my ancestors are from,” Earnhardt said after the Michigan race. “I’ve been searching my genealogy for about five years now, and I made a promise to myself then that I would go to Germany and understand more about my ancestors when I turn 40, so here I am.”

The Hendrick Motorsports driver didn’t reveal much about his plans, but he will be traveling Martin Friedrich from his JR Motorsports team. Along with Friedrich, Earnhardt will also bring girlfriend Amy Reimann, his sister sister Kelley and her husband L.W.

One notable person that will be left behind is JR Motorsports brand director Mike Davis. The reason for him staying behind was to watch after one of Friedrich’s special friends, which was the highlight of the recent JRM360 on YouTube:

He’ll also be on a commercial flight for the first time in nearly 14 years when he departs for Germany.

“I’m real nervous about flying over there,” he said. “I haven’t flown commercial since 9/11, so it’s been a long time. My friends tell me I’m in for a treat, and just hopefully it’s just a good trip.”

I have just one request for Junior—and I think most JR Nation fans will agree—can we please get a Periscope from the Autobahn? We’re used to seeing Earnhardt go fast, but that’s a different type of awesome.
