Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte starting lineup for Sprint Cup

For a second straight week, Joe Gibbs Racing has one of the fastest cars on the track. Days after Denny Hamlin cashed in on a $1 million check from the Sprint All-Star race, Gibbs teammate Matt Kenseth qualified on the pole in Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600.

Kenseth’s fastest lap came at the perfect time as he ran 194.252 mph during the final round of knockout qualifying. While Hamlin’s night was memorable due to the payday, what Kenseth accomplished is more meaningful for the race to the Chase.

The pole award was Kenseth’s first at CMS, narrowly edging out Joey Logano, who has three poles this season. Along with Kenseth and Logano, five other Fords and Toyotas made up the top seven with Kevin Harvick serving as the first Chevrolet in eighth.

“Those guys have been fast in the race—that’s where their speed really shines,” Logano said after qualifying. “They qualify good—don’t get me wrong—but in the race they shine a little bit more. You’re talking about the 4, the 41 and the 48. Those are the ones that stand out.

“And I’m sure they’ll be fast when it comes to race time. Qualifying’s a different animal. You use a completely different setup, and qualifying can kind of mask over some issues you have in race trim a lot of times.”

Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished in the top 15, but no Hendrick Motorsports car made it to the final round of qualifying. Kenseth may be starting up front, but every other driver has 600 miles to catch him regardless of the starting order.
