Currently in his 13th season at the Sprint Cup level, Mears has seen steady improvement with Germain. Though he hasn’t matched the success from 2007 and 2008 with Hendrick Motorsports, the 37-year-old driver has made the team competitive.
“It’s really exciting to drive the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS again in 2016,” Mears said in the release. “I think that it’s been a long time in the making here at Germain Racing, being competitive at the Cup level. It’s been a long process to get the GEICO program to where we are now.
“We are finally starting to see some of the benefits from all the hard work from the last four or five years.”
Holding onto one top 10 this season, Mears still has some work to do if he wants to make the Chase. But with the confidence of his team and the knowledge that he’ll be back behind the wheel next year, it should be interesting to see how Mears wraps up his fifth season with the team.
