A year after making the Chase with the team, A.J. Allmendinger has signed a five-year contract extension with JTG Daugherty Racing. Allmendinger will drive the No. 47 Chevrolet through at least 2020 with the single-car team.
The former Champ Car driver won a race last season at Watkins Glen and is off to a solid start in 2015. Currently 19th in the traditional points standings, Allmendinger has two top-10 finishes in the first 10 races.
“I have always said I have a verbal lifetime contract with JTG Daugherty Racing, but I want to announce today that I have officially signed a contract for a five-year deal,” Allmendinger said during a press conference. “It’s pretty cool to me because I love it here and love the family atmosphere Jodi Geschickter, Tad Geschickter and Brad Daugherty have established. Not only do we have a family bond, we have a healthy future with some of the biggest and best brands in the business.”
Allmendinger’s extension comes shortly after Kroger signing on as a long-term sponsor. That agreement includes 17 races this season and 24 by 2016. With myriad sponsors signed on including Bush’s, Clorox and Scott, Allmendinger said the decision was an easy one to make.
“The great thing is we’ve got a lot of sponsors,” Allmendinger said. “The tough thing is trying to remember them all. My suit weighs like 12 pounds now. It’s a good problem to have.
“With that said, those sponsors are here long-term; Tad and I did a new deal through 2020 which to me was just a no-brainer.”
He may have failed to reach the second round of the Chase last year, but Allmendinger has certainly shown improvement in the No. 47 machine. With an extension and countless sponsors on board, the future looks bright for both the driver and his team.
